Before I started this blog, I posted about songs from old AT40s on Facebook, January-July 2017. I’ll be moving them here over time. This entry has been edited somewhat from the original.
A favorite from the spring of 79 was this brilliant jazz-pop confection from newcomer Rickie Lee Jones (#7 here, peaked at #4). She never came particularly close again to reaching the commercial success of her debut disk, but I sorta kept tabs on her throughout the 80s (I love “The Real End” from 84). This song was part of pop chart history two weeks later, when for the first (and only, I think) time the top 5 singles were all by female singers/groups: Rickie Lee was joined by Sister Sledge (“We Are Family”), Donna Summer (“Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff”), and Anita Ward (“Ring My Bell”).
Also, I can’t resist linking to the cool pre-Mac use of tools and icons in “The Real End.”
