American Top 40 PastBlast, 10/9/76: Bay City Rollers, “I Only Want To Be With You”

If you’re within a year of my age, then almost certainly there were females in your junior high class who went gaga over the Bay City Rollers. Les, Woody, Derek, and crew had a string of Top 10 hits in the UK starting in 74, with world domination (“Rollermania”), brief though it was, following around the end of 75. While they had gone hard down the teen idol route–complete with questionable fashion choices–they really were musicians and their US hits are solid-to-very-good pop offerings. “Money Honey” and “Rock and Roll Love Letter” are the picks of the litter, but this Dusty Springfield remake (#17 now, peaking at #12) was one I liked quite a bit at the time. Honestly, it still sounds great to me.

So, let’s hang the tartan flags high and salute those of our peers who had BCR posters in their lockers; they weren’t wrong in the least to dig the music.
